Humus per la Biosfera – Indoor Environmental Education

After the summer holidays, lessons in the schools around Mount Etna started again. Repeating one of the most important projects’ activities, we started the second run of our indoor school lessons on environmental education. The focus is on the relevance of soil for climate protection and humus build-up. We teach the primary school students with […]

Humus per la Biosfera – Microorganisms for Humus Growth

Within our humus project, microorganisms are a central element of our research work as they play an important role in the conversion of organic matter to humus. Together with international volunteers and students, we are experimenting with commercial “Effective Microorganisms” (EM) to derive recommendations for action in agriculture and domestic composting. EM are used in […]

Humus per la Biosfera – “Terra Preta” for Carbon Sequestration

In various experiments we explore the practicability of Terra Preta as a climate and fertility solution in the smallholder agriculture in Sicily. The Etna surrounding valleys are rich in fruit and olive tree cultures pruned every year. The huge amount of tree pruning is often burnt directly on site and causes high climate emissions. Producing […]

Humus per la Biosfera – Oak Protection on Mt. Egitto

The project “Humus per la Biosfera” by Manfred-Hermsen-Stiftung and Giacche Verdi Bronte gives another important push for saving an unique ancient oak forest at the Etna volcano. One student conducted a comparative biodiversity study on the topic.

Training sessions for the new volunteers

Two examples: The president of Giacche Verdi Bronte, Gino Montagno, gave a lesson on hand sowing of a traditional oat-barley-sweetvetch mixture in order to cover and regenerate the soil. The visit of the small humus farm “Biotica” (photo above) taught the young volunteers all about the production of humus by earthworms and enabled them to […]
