Background

The energy transition in CEE is critical for achieving the EU’s climate goals, particularly the European Green Deal and its commitment to climate neutrality by 2050. CEE countries, such as Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Slovakia, face specific challenges related to their heavy reliance on fossil fuels, with many regions needing tailored support for just transitions. To facilitate the decarbonisation process, the EU offers funding mechanisms, including the Just Transition Fund, which aims to help vulnerable communities. This project aligns with the EU’s climate policies, such as the National Energy and Climate Plans, and focuses on empowering local authorities to access these funds and implement transformative energy projects. The project also contributes to the long-term implementation of the EU’s climate strategies.

Project

This project will directly address the need for local authorities in Central and Eastern Europe to unlock European Union funding for just and sustainable energy transitions. It will equip regional leaders with the knowledge and tools to design and implement decarbonisation projects. Key activities will include providing training on accessing EU funds, developing decarbonisation plans, addressing bottlenecks in the energy transition, and involving vulnerable groups in these efforts.
The project will focus on key regions such as Upper Silesia (Poland), Hunedoara (Romania), and Latgale (Latvia), fostering collaboration with local authorities, civil society, and EU institutions. Awareness-raising activities and advocacy will ensure that these regions benefit from financial support, accelerating their energy transition and aligning with EU climate goals. Collaboration with other EU-funded projects will guarantee the sustainability and scaling of the project’s impact.
