Background

The European Union (EU) aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, requiring a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector. Countries such as Croatia, Czechia, Slovakia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina face significant challenges in decarbonising transport, including rising emissions, insufficient sustainable mobility plans, and limited cooperation among municipalities.

In Croatia, road transport accounts for 96.4% of transport emissions, while Czechia’s transport sector contributes 16% of total emissions. Slovakia and Bosnia and Herzegovina also struggle with outdated policies and fragmented planning. National strategies, such as Croatia’s Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan and the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans, outline sustainable mobility goals but need effective implementation. CLIMove aligns with these policies and the European Green Deal by fostering knowledge, cooperation, and capacity building to achieve climate-neutral mobility.

Project

The CLIMove project addresses the urgent need for sustainable urban mobility in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). It promotes climate-neutral urban mobility through capacity building, education, and multi-level cooperation in Croatia, Czechia, Slovakia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It empowers local governments, young professionals, and the public to implement sustainable mobility solutions.

Key activities include:

  • Workshops and seminars for public authorities to improve mobility planning skills.
  • Summer schools for young professionals to develop practical knowledge of climate-neutral mobility.
  • Study visits to cities leading in sustainable transport, such as Leuven and Brussels, to showcase best practices.
  • Public awareness campaigns during European Mobility Week to encourage walking, cycling, and public transport.
  • Development of training programme tailored to the needs of participating cities.
