Factsheet: Green Public Procurement

EUKI project SURF supports Germany, Hungary, and Romania in promoting sustainable building renovations to achieve climate-neutral building stocks. By focusing on empowering municipal actors, the project provides tools and training to address the untapped potential for energy-efficient renovations in public buildings.

The factsheet about Green Public Procurement highlights the potential of Green Public Procurement (GPP) to reduce the building sector’s carbon footprint, responsible for 36% of the EU’s energy-related emissions. It emphasises integrating environmental criteria into procurement processes to promote sustainability throughout a building’s lifecycle, from design to demolition. SURF presents a case study from Pesaro, Italy, as a best practice example which showcases the transformation of an old barracks into the LEED Platinum-certified “Antonio Brancati” school. By prioritising circular economy principles, the project achieved a 59% reduction in energy consumption, recycled 98% of construction waste, and cut water usage by 50%. This demonstrates how GPP can drive innovative, energy-efficient, and sustainable building practices.
