Focus Paper on Agroforestry Systems as Natural Carbon Sinks
EUKI project Landcare Europe promotes climate-friendly farming in Germany, Lithuania, Romania, Croatia, and the Czech Republic. It develops policy recommendations for future CAP measures and organises workshops, field visits, and farmer training to strengthen carbon sequestration in agricultural landscapes.
The “Focus Paper on Agroforestry Systems as Natural Carbon Sinks” discusses the role of agroforestry in enhancing carbon sequestration and biodiversity. Agroforestry combines trees with agricultural practices, leading to multiple benefits, such as improved soil health, reduced erosion, and increased habitat for wildlife. The publication highlights challenges like regulatory inconsistencies and high initial costs for farmers. It emphasizes the need for clear legal recognition of agroforestry within EU policies, alongside eco-schemes and funding mechanisms. The paper calls for collaboration among land managers and policymakers to maximize agroforestry’s potential in combating climate change and promoting sustainable agriculture.
