Just Transition and Employment in Greece

Shifting towards cleaner energy resources and moving away from fossil fuels is an urgent task that must be well-prepared in order to ensure both efficiency and justice while avoiding grave social and financial consequences.

This report by WWF Greece under the scope of EUKI project Just Transition for the East and South of Europe examines the lignite phase-out efforts in Greece and the accompanying changes in the employment landscape. Greece announced the closure of all lignite-fired power plants by 2028. WWF contributes to this goal by sharing knowledge on the process of a just transition. The purpose of the study is to strengthen the effort of helping out lignite regions in Greece by way of creation of jobs as well as by developing the potential for growth of a lively economy.
