New Developments in European Peatland Strategies

EUKI project Building a European Peatlands Alliance aims to establish a comprehensive and enduring European alliance of national governments and stakeholders committed to peatland climate action.

This new policy brief on European peatland strategies provides recommendations for successful peatland action across Europe, an overview of existing measures and the opportunities for closer cooperation between countries. It is based on a workshop held in May 2024 with 31 governmental representatives and experts from 13 European countries. The brief underscores the urgency of coordinated efforts and long-term financial mechanisms to support peatland restoration, highlighting the need for integrating private sector engagement and innovative funding approaches. Strengthening cross-border collaboration through initiatives like the European Peatlands Initiative will be key to ensuring policy alignment and maximising the ecological and economic benefits of peatland conservation.
