Peatland-related Policies in Six Central and Eastern European Countries

EUKI project Building a European Peatlands Alliance aims to establish a comprehensive and enduring European alliance of national governments and stakeholders committed to peatland climate action.

The report emphasizes the urgent need for peatland restoration across six assessed European countries (Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland), recognizing its critical role in achieving climate targets. It aims to provide actionable insights and recommendations for national governments and policymakers to develop effective strategies that protect, restore, and sustainably manage peatlands. The findings reveal significant challenges, including high levels of peatland degradation and substantial greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the need for robust national funding and private sector involvement.
