Sustainable Finance in Romania: Investor Perspectives and Market Practices
EUKI project Implementation of the EU Reforms on Retail Investing for the Green Transition assesses how Bulgaria, Estonia and Romania are boosting sustainable financial literacy and market conditions to direct retail savings toward low-carbon financial products.
The two reports “Investor & Public Perspectives on Sustainable Finance in Romania: A Mixed-Method Analysis” and “Romanian Report on Financial Sustainable Products – A State of Market Practices” examine both demand-side and supply-side dynamics shaping sustainable investment in Romania. The studies review investor awareness, motivations, and risk perceptions, alongside market practices, product availability, sustainability claims, and the quality of financial advisory services. They find that while sustainable finance products and ESG-related communication are increasingly present, investor knowledge remains limited, transparency of impact claims is often weak, and advisory services lack sufficient expertise. Interest in sustainable investment is growing, yet concrete market offerings remain scarce and trust in sustainability claims is fragile. Without stronger disclosure standards, better investor education, and improved advisory capacity, Romania risks slow uptake of sustainable finance and continued exposure to greenwashing practices.
