#EUKIworks

EUKI success stories show how climate action works in practice across Europe. They highlight what dedicated individuals, organisations, and municipalities have achieved through EUKI projects – from knowledge transfer to measurable CO₂ savings. For example, new university courses were created at Riga Technical University, practical guides for local climate action were developed in Croatia, and local renovation networks were established in Hungary. Each story proves how diverse and effective European climate action can be.

Where EUKI Projects Reduce CO₂

EUKI projects have a wide-ranging impact: they strengthen national climate guidelines, disseminate technical knowledge and make a concrete contribution to climate neutrality. Here we present selected examples of EUKI projects that are promoting climate protection by reducing CO₂ emissions in different European regions.

Quotes and Voices

Jurislav Babić, PhD, full prof. University of Osijek, Faculty of Food Technology

“With the help of EUKI project EDU-CLIC, an operational improvement plan and a dedicated training curriculum for landfill operators were developed to help transform the Srem–Mačva Regional Landfill into a modern demonstration centre for municipal solid waste management. The project achieved a reduction in CH₄ emissions of 43.7 t by diverting 317.17 t of agricultural biomass away from landfill. Most of this biomass was transformed into 70.1 tonnes of briquettes and pellets, which helped vulnerable households to stay warm during the heating season while reducing environmental impact.”

Elena Kamenova, Educational Programmes Manager National Trust EcoFund (NTEF)

Through the EUKI-supported project, climate action and energy efficiency were systematically embedded in teacher training and school practice in Bulgaria. Since 2019, close to 100 kindergartens and schools have implemented the developed curriculum, reaching more than 50,000 students to date. As the curriculum became mandatory for all institutions financed through NTEF’s ongoing energy efficiency programmes, new cohorts of students and new institutions are engaged every year, ensuring long-term impact, behavioural change, and sustained greenhouse gas emission reductions within the education system.”

Lilian Car, Project Manager for Forests and Natura 2000 at Luberon Regional Natural Park

The EUKI-funded MediterRE3 project has developed a Landscape Action Plan for the Luberon Regional Natural Park, providing a shared, operational framework for preventive fire management at the landscape scale. Several actions identified in the LAP are currently being integrated into the official Forest Fire Protection Massif Plan, supporting long-term institutional uptake. This process strengthens coordination among public authorities and practitioners and equips the territory with a concrete tool to reduce wildfire risk, enhance climate resilience and contribute to lowering greenhouse gas emissions from forest fires”

Sonja Risteska, Agora Energiewende

“The EUKI has helped us to establish a network of independent think tanks in South-East Europe that are working to accelerate the energy transition. We develop evidence-based solutions and are thought leaders for the climate-friendly transformation of the energy sector. Our aim is to achieve a secure, clean and affordable energy supply for the region.”

Marco Trisciuzzi, Managing Director of AHK Slovakia

“The EUKI funding enabled our project Young Energy Europe to educate 1.600 young professionals in 14 CEE countries to become Energy Scouts. They receive an energy efficiency training and directly apply the knowledge in their companies in a practical project, reducing energy consumption, related costs and saving CO2 at the same time. The results are impressive – since 2018 Energy Scouts revealed total savings of 200 GWh of electricity and 160.000 tons of CO2 per year in their workplaces.”

Dr. Joana Maćkowiak-Pandera, President and Founder of Forum Energii

„In our Clean Heat project, EUKI funding enabled us to conduct analyses of air pollution in the country and draft strategies or low-emission heat generation. The results were published in 2020 by the Polish Ministry of Climate and Environment, and significantly informed the decision to stop burning coal in cities by 2030 and villages by 2040.“
