The European Union is debating how to make the green transition both effective and socially fair. While reducing emissions is a shared objective, there are growing disagreements about how the costs of the transition should be distributed and how to protect households from rising energy and transport costs. Several Member States are pushing for further postponement of the upcoming EU Emissions Trading System (ETS2) for buildings and road transport, alongside a dilution of the current Emissions Trading System.

This web seminar explores the current state of play of the ETS2 and its revenue use at a crucial moment for its implementation. Some Member States are demanding the inclusion of ETS2 in the ongoing reform of the ETS Directive, others have not yet transposed the initial ETS2 provisions into national law. This web seminar aims to assess progress so far, examine the implications of current political developments for ETS2 and discuss how Europe can make its transition effective, socially fair and politically resilient.

Web Seminar Topics:

  • Current political developments and implications for the implementation of ETS2
  • The economic and social impacts of ETS2 on EU competitiveness
  • The role of ETS2 revenues and the Social Climate Fund in ensuring a socially just transition
  • Next steps for the effective and politically resilient implementation

Speakers:

  • Katalin Tarr, Policy Officer, Clean Air Action Group (EUKI Project: ClimateFair Monitor)
  • Jonas Sonnenschein, Deputy Director, Umanotera (EUKI Project: ClimateFair Monitor)
