From 1 July 2025, Denmark will assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. With a strong track record as one of the most ambitious Member States on climate action, Denmark will undertake the significant task of guiding the EU’s approach to setting a key climate target for 2040. It will also launch the formal process of negotiating a new long-term budget and facilitate crucial investments in the energy transition, such as the upcoming European Grids Package — in addition to representing the EU on the global stage at COP30 in Brazil.

In this webinar, organised by CAN Europe, we explored these challenges and opportunities, and discussed how the Danish Presidency can deliver outcomes that are both ambitious and just. What role can civil society play in engaging with the Presidency on these critical issues, in support of the economic and social wellbeing of European societies and the EU’s leadership in global climate action?

Agenda

  • What can we expect in terms of climate and energy policy at EU level over the next six months?
  • Overview of the Danish Presidency’s plans and the priorities of Danish civil society
  • The EU’s 2040 climate target and Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)
  • The role of the Danish Presidency in the negotiations on the next Multiannual Financial Framework
  • How can the Danish Presidency steer the EU towards the ambitious implementation of key energy transition policies?

  • Bertel Dons Christensen, Danish Ministry for Climate, Energy and Utilities
  • Wojciech Szymalski, Institute for Sustainable Development
