Offshore wind energy represents a crucial opportunity for Central and Eastern Europe to improve its energy security, accelerate the decarbonisation process, and unlock new opportunities for economic development in coastal communities.

According to the current national projections, Poland, Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria have the potential to host offshore wind projects with a combined capacity of 15 GW by 2030, and 40 GW by 2050.

Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD) is organising an international policy conference in Sofia on 21 November from 9:30 until 11.30 EET on Unlocking the Potential of Offshore Wind in Central and Eastern Europe. The discussion will bring together leading energy policymakers, business representatives, civil society leaders and independent experts to explore innovative approaches to overcoming the technical and governance obstacles before attracting investment in the nascent development of the sector.

The event will examine how CEE countries can learn from the experience and expertise of the most mature markets in the North and Baltic Sea to establish robust policy frameworks, which balance the business needs of wind investors with thоse of environmental protection and sustainable economic co-existence.
