From Empty Buildings to Affordable Homes

Transforming Invisible Buildings brings vacant and underused buildings back into use, tackling both the housing crisis and energy poverty in European cities. The project was among the initiatives showcased. Our stand was one of the very few selected from over 70 stands for a visit by Dan Jørgensen, the first-ever EU Commissioner for Energy and Housing. The Commissioner showed a genuine interest in the project and asked questions about the mapping methodology under development and the project’s goals.

In addition to this special visit, several visitors from across Europe stopped by to share their housing stories — including Sara, who told us about a collective’s fight to repurpose an abandoned historic building in Berlin, and Tom, who shared his struggle to find a decent, affordable apartment to rent in Prague. These stories are a reminder of an emergency that – if not seriously addressed – risks deepening social inequalities and fuelling political polarisation. This is why projects like ours, and the NEB Festival itself, are important for putting communities’ needs back at the heart of policy.

Over five inspiring days, more than 4,000 people – political leaders, innovators, businesses, practitioners, researchers, artists, and citizens – visited the fair, enjoyed artistic performances, and were inspired by insightful sessions and workshops.

The NEB Festival is a reminder that initiatives like Transforming Invisible Buildings are not alone – together, we form a growing community committed to building a more sustainable, beautiful, inclusive and just Europe.
