Climate-Friendly Mountain Huts Firmly Established on the Political Agenda

The EUKI project ‘Reducing Emissions in Carpathian Mountain Huts’ has made a lasting contribution to the development of climate-friendly mountain huts in Romania. The first-ever survey of mountain huts, together with a comparison with other Carpathian countries, remains an important evidence base for policy-making. Its findings also shape investment decisions by public authorities, mountaineering associations, and tourism organisations. Building on the project's recommendations, the Transylvanian Carpathian Association (SKV) proposed, for the first time, that the term ‘mountain hut’ be legally enshrined in Romanian law, thereby laying the foundations for a binding framework for the development of sustainable mountain infrastructure. At the same time, the technical guidelines and examples of European best practice are being incorporated into the planning of a climate-friendly model mountain hut. The partnerships and specialist networks established during the project remain active and continue to foster international knowledge exchange. The project has thus permanently altered the way mountain huts are viewed: today, they are no longer seen merely as tourist infrastructure, but as an important contribution to climate-friendly mobility, sustainable tourism, environmental education, and regional development in the Carpathians.
