Climate in the Curriculum: How an EUKI-project Transformed Bulgarian Education

Topics: Climate Policy Education

Countries: Bulgaria

The EUKI project Climate Action Curriculum BGR succeeded in permanently anchoring climate protection in teacher training in Bulgaria. A new curriculum was introduced at universities, and 12 trainers were qualified to pass it on in the long term. Over 130 teachers and 2,000 students tested the materials in class, developed a keen awareness of energy efficiency, and carried out their own measurements of potential savings in their school buildings. In the city of Bourgas, 16 additional schools and 5 kindergartens also joined the project. Finally, the project laid important foundations for anchoring climate education in national education standards and developing new university programs on climate, sustainability, and energy efficiency.
