How the DLEZ Concept Advances Urban Decarbonisation in Alba Iulia

As part of the EUKI project 'ClimAct CEE', Romania's first district-level decarbonised and low-emission zone (DLEZ) was established in Alba Iulia. The designated zone addresses traffic and emissions from buildings, combining air pollution control with climate change mitigation. This plan continues to shape local investments and planning decisions. Several measures have already been implemented, including the decarbonisation of the 'Dorin Pavel' Technical College's school buildings. In parallel, the plan has supported the modernisation of the municipality's infrastructure through improvements to public transport, expanded cycle paths, new green spaces, and the development of smart transport hubs. Pupils, residents, and the city administration now benefit from lower energy consumption, reduced operating costs, and improved municipal services.
