Wanted: The Best Climate Action Ideas from Hoteliers in the Alpine Region
On 1 September, the second climate action competition “ClimaHost II” was launched. Hotels, hostels, youth hostels, inns, guesthouses or mountain huts from the Alpine region that have implemented exemplary climate action measures and contribute to a sustainable tourism offer can apply.
Innovative Approaches
With around 100 million guests annually, the Alps are one of the most important tourist destinations in the world. For the region’s highly seasonal hospitality industry, climate change has far-reaching consequences. Although hotels in the Alps are affected by climate change, they also contribute to climate change through their high energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions.
Recent years have shown that many businesses in the Alps are already aware of their role and have implemented innovative approaches to corporate environmental and climate action. This commitment should be made visible. The organisers of the competition therefore want to promote sustainable tourism offers that focus on experiencing and preserving this unique natural and cultural space.
The competition has a holistic perspective on the sustainability of tourism offers and includes the following dimensions:
– Energy & Environment
– Mobility
– Purchasing & Procurement
– Management & Communication
– Socio-cultural factors.
Measures with a high greenhouse gas reduction potential, such as energy-efficient modernisation or the use of innovative technologies, are given the highest weighting. However, businesses that consistently focus on climate action outside of extensive modernisation, for example through sustainable procurement or raising awareness of climate action issues among employees and/or guests, can also apply.
