In this workshop, European experts share key lessons learned, exchange their strategies for phasing out gas, and discuss transferable best practices as well as the policy and technological frameworks enabling cross-sector solutions.

Description

The phase-out of natural gas is picking up speed across Europe. Driven by climate targets and renewed concerns about energy security, governments are re-evaluating the role of gas in power generation, heating and industry. While regulation, carbon pricing and new industrial policy tools are sending clear signals, implementation remains uneven and often contested.

Transforming ambition into reality is no easy feat. Risks associated with gas lock-in, infrastructure constraints, the need for high upfront investment, affordability concerns and complex governance structures can all delay progress. Experience shows that credible long-term signals, coordinated planning across sectors and early stakeholder engagement are essential for a successful transition.

This interactive workshop will bring together experts from across Europe to discuss the ways in which they are addressing the phase-out of gas in their respective countries. Short country presentations will highlight how national strategies address gas use, the sectors most at risk, and where key policy gaps persist. Participants will then have the opportunity to engage in structured discussions focusing on practical solutions, cross-sector technology shifts and policy frameworks that can ensure a credible and socially balanced gas phase-out in the areas of power, buildings and district heating, and industry.
