Connecting Europe with a Rail Renaissance

dflip

EUKI project European Rail Renaissance aimed to enhance cross-border railway passenger transport across Europe by publishing an EU Policy Paper and four national policy papers for Poland, France, Germany, and Spain. It provided policy recommendations and engages stakeholders through public consultations on the EU Sustainable Mobility Strategy.

This report examines the future of rail transport in Europe, highlighting its potential to enhance the EU’s climate targets and European integration. It underscores the current challenges, including a fragmented rail network and insufficient cross-border services due to historical focus on road and air travel. The report advocates for the development of a dense, Europe-wide rail network, adjustments to transport taxes and infrastructure charges, and improvements in passenger convenience. It suggests that reviving long-distance international trains could be a flagship EU project, symbolising a renewed commitment to a unified and efficient European rail system.
