National Long-Term Climate Strategies

EUKI project BioJust supports the energy transition of solid-fuel-dependent, energy-poor households in Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania by improving national policies and developing financial instruments. It also establishes local action plans and assists municipalities with their implementation.

The project wrote three country-specific reports to support the revision of the long-term climate strategy in Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania, respectively. These reports emphasise the importance of effective land management in mitigating climate change, strengthening carbon sequestration and improving biomass planning. Each report reflects the specific national context and outlines concrete recommendations to support the implementation of more ambitious climate targets in line with EU objectives. A central conclusion is that transparent planning of future biomass supply and demand should be ensured so that biomass use complies with sustainability criteria. The reports also advice integrating the long-term impacts of the biomass cascading principle, securing natural carbon sequestration through well-defined measures, and prioritising energy efficiency. Additionally, they emphasise the need for deep building renovations to reduce dependence on firewood and support vulnerable households during the transition to a green energy economy.
