Policy Brief: Natural Climate Protection Through Agriculture

EUKI project Landcare Europe promotes climate-friendly farming in Germany, Lithuania, Romania, Croatia, and the Czech Republic. It develops policy recommendations for future Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) measures and organises workshops, field visits, and farmer training to strengthen carbon sequestration in agricultural landscapes.

In order to advise decision-makers on how to improve the regulatory framework conditions and funding policies for climate-friendly farming, the project developed national recommendations embedded within the national CAP strategic plans. These recommendations build decisively on the insights gained from the series of four focus papers previously developed by Landcare on peatlands, agroforestry systems, natural carbon sinks, and extensively managed grasslands. Each project partner formulated a policy paper containing recommendations for their specific national context. The papers encouraged the restoration of drained peatlands to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, they proposed a sustainable management of species-rich grasslands to protect biodiversity.
