GreenTecLab: Start-Ups of the month
Green start-ups are supported as part of the GreenTecLab project. Once a month, one of these start-ups is presented on the GTL website as Start-up of the Month.
April: NG Drone
GreenTecLab’s Start-Up of the month April is the Spanish Start-Up “NG Drone” founded by José Antonio López Ferreiro and Alberto López Platero. “Andalucía is a region where agriculture plays a paramount role for its economy. It is one of the biggest vegetable suppliers in Europe. Nowadays, droughts are jeopardising the crops every year. That is where the idea was born. The initiative started as an attempt to face this critical situation and the solution in the form of crop monitoring using drones was conceived. The start-up is in its early stages working on the technology demonstrator.”

Inspired by GreenTecLab’s business project, the young Spanish Alejandro Sánchez came up with this idea to share electricity. “They came to my school and gave two talks on how to create a business. My dad explained to me how solar panels work and told me that when we produce more energy than we use at home, that surplus goes straight to the electricity company and is sold at a lower price than the usual market price. Then we started thinking how to make this change and we ended up creating Sharectricity.” Via an app they are going to connect people with a surplus of energy with other users that are looking for a way to pay less on their electricity bill.
“DryFeet” is a startup created by Universidad de Sevilla’s students to solve an everyday problem for nearly a quarter of the Spanish population: the feet odor. And how do they palliate it? Using shoe insoles with clays! Because of the clay’s structure, they are able to capture small molecules, such as water which is mostly the causant of the odor (because it lets the bacteria grow). This idea is also an eco-friendly and national production solution. “Nowadays, we keep working on experimental tests to start the validation process in a later stage.”

“Even though Slovakia is a small country, we have approximately 120 roasters that, when roasting 100 kilograms of coffee beans, produce 2 kilograms of coffee by-product. This by-product is called Silverskin. It contains bioactive ingredients such as caffeine, micro- and macro- nutrients, and fiber, and above all, it tastes different from coffee. Our goal is the application of this raw material and the creation of a new product. And that of an innovative drink that currently has no competition in this form on the market. By using the currently unused, to support the circular economy not only at the regional level in Slovakia, but also worldwide, and thus contribute to the reduction of food waste.”
“This entrepeneurship project emerges as a natural step after more than 10 years working in research and development of low-power low-cost embedded electronic systems applied to environmental monitoring. In the last few years, our activity has been focused on wild animal monitoring aiming at providing valuable information to biologists, conservations and managers in order to reverse the terrible biodiversity loss caused by humanity. We have been mostly supported by public R&D funds, and these days we are in the process of engaging the first clients in the niche of organizations devoted to nature conservation and international research groups. The founder team is composed by four electronic and telecommunication engineers, two physicists specialized in electronics, and one biologist. Our vision for the future is to become an international reference company in conservation technologies, with the capacity to cover all aspects involving hardware, software and algorithmics required for the deployment of systems and services that allow monitoring nature effectively and making optimal decisions as soon as possible.”

“Our founding team came together during a brainstorming session on an entrepreneurial ecosystem event. We began talking about the technical and engineering problems that the present weather routing systems have and how we can solve them. Some of our founders had prior entrepreneurial expertise while working for other tech businesses while others were employed in the maritime industry. Even though we delayed starting a start-up right away, the “seed” for our partnership had already been planted. Our mission is to redefine voyage optimisation solutions, by utilising artificial intelligence, naval engineering and earth observation data for a greener shipping sector.”
October: THE GROVE CRETE
“After meeting in Berlin, we realized that big city life was no longer for us. The prospect of hosting guests from all over the world and reconnecting with nature had much greater appeal. We both share family roots in the Mediterranean region. That is why Crete was a natural choice for the location of THE GROVE CRETE – not just because we admire Greek history, mythology, cuisine and handcraft. The island is located right between Asia minor, Europe and North Africa, with a South coast that has remained almost untouched by mass tourism, harbouring bountiful natural and cultural resources. In the face of climate change, the sustainable use of these resources became our guiding principle.”

“Our project was created as an urgent need to reduce the high consumption of unhealthy sweets and introduce biologically active and nutritionally valuable elements into the human diet to foster human health. The falsification of honey is a big problem and honey is the third most-faked food.”

July: Veles Farming
“We stumbled upon vertical farming when we were working on a project for the United Nations SDGs. In the end we decided to work on something else (smart waste management/ microgrid) but vertical farming stuck long after being done with the projects. So we decided to make a start up out of it.”
June: Crete Hinterland
“We are a team that started from the evening Vocational High School of Platanias Chania Crete, with adults students and we have a vision to promote the inland of our island. Away from the lights of the city and the famous places we offer alternative forms of tourism for visitors who want to follow the paths of Cretan Tradition, to meet and experience authentic Crete. For that reason, we created a social cooperative enterprise with the name Crete Hinterland.”
