Background

Greece aims to become climate-neutral by 2050. Green hydrogen paves the way for decarbonisation in cases where electricity from renewable energy cannot be used directly. Greece does not yet have a market for green hydrogen. The existing legal framework does not contain any provisions on hydrogen production, transportation and use, and there are no support or funding instruments yet for green hydrogen. The Greek public sector also lacks expertise and experience regarding green hydrogen.

Project

The project team advises the Greek partners with the aim of enhancing the framework for the production, transportation and use of green hydrogen. To this end, it is helping to revise the strategic and legal framework for green hydrogen in Greece and providing support for the financing of projects relating to the production or use of green hydrogen. The project is also supporting the Greek partners to develop the necessary expertise in green hydrogen. At the same time, the project analyses existing obstacles, shares relevant experiences and examples of good practice from other European countries, and draws up recommendations for the development of green hydrogen in Greece. H2Greece is thus laying the foundations for the implementation of the country’s first green hydrogen projects. This project is co-financed with EU funding.
