Climate Action to the Table: Educating on food sustainability

The topic of the intersection between food and climate change is crucial in this day and age. The world food production system creates almost a third of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and is therefore one of the main reasons for the climate crisis we are experiencing right now. It also motivates faster biodiversity loss, which poses a risk to the existence of human civilisation. Partnering organisations in the Climate Action to the Table project are spreading important messages through the organisation of different events, trainings for educators, interactive games for students and much more.

Educators trainings by Umanotera

Umanotera organised two trainings for educators on the topic of teaching about food in times of climate change (on May 24 and on September 28 2022). Both trainings were attended by more than 50 educators that learned about specific activities that they can use in their work. They also tried out one of the proposed workshops about food sustainability (to be implemented in class). Climate friendly catering was offered.

On October 8 2022 Fundesplai also organised a training for educators. It took place in 4 sessions, all on the same day. The educators listened to a presentation and took part in the training about a toolkit, tried out some of its proposed activities and visited the garden, visited the exhibition EAT, ACT, IMPACT and shared good practices and ideas among each other. A total of 53 people attended the event.

Teaching guidelines for educators

After attending educator trainings by Umanotera and Fundesplai, teachers and educators received a helpful collection of tools for teaching the new learned skills about climate-friendly food in their respective classes. The publications present the topic of climate-friendlier food in a comprehensive and interactive manner. Educators received a toolkit for setting up nine different workshops on the topic of climate and health friendlier food. They also received specific instructions for setting up the escape room, during which the students learn the 7 principles of climate-friendly food (plant-based, produced sustainably, not wasted, seasonal, local, not packaged, not processed).

Escape room sessions by Fundesplai

Fundesplai held 31 sessions of the escape room in high schools, non formal educational centres and as an open activity for families in their offices. They have reached a total of 598 young participants, aged between 12 and 18.

Escape room sessions by Umanotera

After first launching the escape room in June, Umanotera continued to visit high schools in order to organise escape room games for students and to give lectures on climate-friendly food. In order to reach more people they have also done some implementations as part of the week of global learning. All combined, they held 15 escape room sessions in high schools and educational centres and reached 413 people.
