Frutti per la Biosfera – Photo Documentation

Thanks to a one-time grant from the EUKI programme, we were able to start a new environmental education project on Mount Etna in Sicily: It is about climate action through nutrition, according to the motto: local/ regional/ seasonal and – if possible – organic. The central activity is gardening in schoolyards. In addition, the children visit farms, and for some cities farmers’ markets and exchanges of experts are organized. Before school activities, there are lessons in the classroom, and our international young ERASMUS volunteers help with all of this.

The first project year was successfully completed in September 2019. Thanks to the great popularity and active participation of the schools, we will continue the project in the following years. 1.500 children from 11 schools around Mount Etna laid out gardens in 9 schoolyards and cultivated vegetables. 8 excursions to organic farms were organised as well as 5 “zero-km” farmer markets and 1 agricultural information event with 50 participants.
